Inspired as he was by nature and the outdoors from a young age, J.C. eventually majored in Environmental Studies and Geography, at UC Santa Barbara. While doing fieldwork for his studies there, J.C. made numerous trips to California’s scenic and pristine Channel Islands, were he was enthralled by their beauty. Capturing this beauty took his photography to a new level, and awakened a desire to photograph professionally. He then enrolled in Brooks Institute of Photography, also in Santa Barbara, and one of the premier photography schools in the country. Upon graduating from Brooks in 1988, J.C. moved to Colorado, a state he had fallen in love with years before, and built a successful freelance photography business there.

J.C. Leacock is a photographer whose outstanding images capture the beauty, grandeur and intimacy of the American landscape, as well as the excitement of the outdoor western lifestyle. His work is widely published, and has appeared in such publications as Sierra Magazine, Backpacker, Outside, Western Horseman and American Cowboy as well as Sierra Club, Audubon and Western Horseman calendars. His most recent book, Colorado Close-Up (Fulcrum Publishers 1997), celebrates the beauty and intimacy of the Colorado landscape. He recently completed two coffee table books, Our Colorado (Voyageur Press), and South Dakota Simply Beautiful (FarCountry Press), both due out in the fall of 2003. He and his wife Kriste live in the Crested Butte/Gunnison area of western Colorado.
